Yes the consequences of a wrong answer are grave.

Actually I was just curious if others were doing the same thing i was doing and if so why.

everyone knows the classics, i want to discover the unchartered waters, new shows. that's where i am right now. no bias, no recommendations , just pop it in the player, and see what is there. nothing post brent, though. i'm not ready for that yet.

Got a serious answer for you now...in light of TB's comments, I decided to quickly backup SHNs of my absolutely couldn't live without em shows given I could only select a few from each yr to do it quickly:

1-20, 10-12, 10-13, 12-7 & 12-29 1968
2-21, 2-22, 4-5, 4-21 & 1969
1-2, 6-7, 9-19 & 9-20 1970
2-18, 7-2, 8-6 & 11-7 1971

For now.

There seems to have been too many horror stories around here lately. I have all of my .mp3 backed up on an external drive (and in the case of 65-69 also on DVD) but can't do that with the lossless. I have them on the external and now making copies onto DVD both in original files as TB mentioned as well as after I have expanded them into audio files and labeled the tracks or added other info. A stack of DVDs is not that expensive.

Oh yeah--I hope you're using the right DVDs!

Talk about paranoia...so what this means is I have all my shows on an ext HD, on DVD, two different sets of CDs ("collection" vs "car, portable, etc.") and NOW the really important shows on a second HD...When will it end? Suppose I have to put a set in a safe deposit box at the bank.

Thankfully i am using the right DVDs (big sigh of relief!!) and my wife has the car with the CD player so I don't keep many audio versions on CD. Hard to slip a disc of 1-20-68 in between the never-ending loop of High School Musical and Shrek soundtracks!!

I use the iPod with an iTrip for my listening pleasures while driving. Luckily I found an open station here so the sound is pretty good.
